    Introduction OPF Spring 2026

Open pedagogy is a topic that I have read about, but I do not yet have a thorough understanding of its principles. My goal for this fellowship is to explore open pedagogy, understand its origins, and find out how I can apply its principles in my course. I want to collaborate with learners and create a shared learning environment where students can make significant contributions and have agency over their learning. To me, open pedagogy involves establishing and maintaining a learning environment where students are co-creators of information that is accessible to everyone, especially those for whom it is intended. By sharing governance over educational materials, students can develop their…

Open Pedagogy Projects – post by Julia Morris

I am wresting with this Open Pedagogy concept. The author, Robert Schuwer, refers to this practice as a way “connecting to the outside world and to the educational process using accessible tools” (‘What is Open Pedagogy?, blog post). He calls the approach an ‘active form of learning.’ How is this active? I am curious. I guess I need more examples.–What might I personally create using this approach? My hope is to put together a tool or assignment for pre-service teachers AND fellow faculty teaching education classes. My hope is to start very simply. Perhaps something called a ‘Child-Watching Engaged Observation’–a running record of one child as she/he participates in 3…

Teaching  Emergent Bilinguals OER Course Design

This is an introductory post about creating an OER for the Education Program’s course EDC 2400, Teaching Emergent Bilinguals.  This is a relatively new course in the Education Program. I submitted a proposal for the course in the Fall of 2020 and I taught it for the first time in the Fall of 2021.  This course explores: It focuses on the role of educators in supporting emergent bilinguals’ learning language and literacy across content areas. I plan to create an open syllabus with twelve modules that include zero cost materials that can be accessed online or through our library.  Why is this course important for Educators? New York City is the largest urban center…

Thank you for Hanging with the Open Ed Librarian

I wanted to express my thanks to all of you for participating in the smaller than usual Spring Cohort of the Open Pedagogy Fellowship! Professor Lili Grigorian turned out to be our only fellow. We appreciate Lili’s fascinating project, which will be a valuable contribution not just to her students, but to the OER/Open Ed landscape of content here at KCC and in the academic community worldwide. We also benefitted from the presence of past Open Pedagogy Fellow Professor Dmitry Brogan. In addition to our Fellows, present and past, we acknowledge the valuable, attentive and robust feedback that our student Sunny Parikh provided in both the Winter and Spring 2023…

    Speech OER Assignment

I teach speech 2100 and 1100 courses, which are Effective Public Speaking and Basic Communication skills.  As of now, I plan on uploading my speech assignments on CUNY Academic Commons. I am still very new in terms of navigating Manifold. In future, once I am confident navigating Manifold I would like to try using that. The creative common license which I wish to apply would be CC by 4.0. Although, I am not too sure about this yet. I would like to take some time, read and learn more about the other licenses and then make a decision. This Cohort has been very beneficial for me. I have learnt so much…

    Choosing among many options

In just three weeks, we’ve been exposed to many ways to reframe our coursework and make it more meaningful for students. As I sat down to write this post, I found myself jumping from one idea to another, and I am still unsure which one I will ultimately develop for this fellowship. Instead of committing to any one project at this point, I will share a list of ideas that have been brewing.  I could imagine reframing this assignment to make it more public. Students’ podcasts could be housed on the Commons. Kristin’s project also encouraged me to think of adding a video component.  I would like to revise one…

Connecting Open Education to User-Centered Design Courses at Kingsborough

When I started the Open Pedagogy Fellowship, I thought I was reasonably prepared with materials in my classes already. Most of my materials were built around project based learning and I have my syllabi up on the commons. Especially with the more technology heavy classes, I’m used to ebbing and flowing with the learners speeding up or slowing down and looking to give extra assignments to more advanced students. I also use a wealth of open source tools in the classroom already. What I learned, however, is that there is still plenty of room to rethink and make the learning more vital and student-led. Because I will be teaching my…

    Kristin’s Student Video Project

Ok, this post ended up way longer than I thought it would be. Don’t feel compelled to read it all…you can skim it and focus on the highlights that are in bold. Writing it helped me think through the project and commit to it! Detail the work you’ve done thus far on your open education project, as well as your plan for completing the project. I decided on a semester-long small group project. My class (Bio 1400) always does a semester-long project, and about half of the classes I’ve taught have done it as a group project. Previously it was a paper and a presentation where they chose a topic…
