Seminar Meeting #1 – March 19th (12:30pm – 2:00pm)
- Video: “Enhancing Pedagogy via Open Educational Practices” with Rajiv Jhangiani
- Reading: DeRosa R. & Robison S. 2017. “From OER to Open Pedagogy: Harnessing the Power of Open” In: Jhangiani R. & Biswas-Diener R, Open. London: Ubiquity Press.
- Activity: Find an existing open assignment example from your discipline/field to share with the group (you can see lots of examples in The Open Pedagogy Notebook at http://openpedagogy.org/open-pedagogy/ )
- Guiding Questions:
- What is open pedagogy?
- What does it mean to teach or learn in an open way?
- What are the barriers/challenges in bringing a greater sense of “open” to all courses in higher education?
Agenda for Meeting #1: What is Open Pedagogy, and What Can We Do with It?
- Estimated Time: 1.5 hours

- Overview of CUNY Academic Commons
- Discuss Meeting #1 Materials – “What is Open”?
- Share sample assignments
Tasks for Meeting #2:
- Find and share a reading, video, resource or activity for our next meeting. These can be about open pedagogy, about our educational systems, about pedagogical practices in your respective fields, etc. Please send to Ryan by April 5th and they will then be posted to our Commons Site.
- Please compose two blog posts. One post should reflect on your initial thoughts about pedagogy and any discoveries you had after our first meeting; the other should reflect on your initial thoughts about potential open assignments for your course(s).
- Please also read and comment on at least one other fellows’ blog post.
- Begin your preliminary drafts of three Open Assignments. These can be very informal sketches, bullet points, fragments but something to get each of us started in thinking through potential open assignments.
Preparation for Seminar Meeting #2 (4/23/21 @ 12:30pm)
Thank you so much for a great meeting today (3/19/21) and for a very inspiring conversation. I will send this information out via email as well, but I wanted to create a post that includes the information that we covered at the end of today’s meeting:
- As a reminder, our next two seminar meetings will be on 4/23 and 5/21 at 12:30pm.

- “What Do We Mean by Open Education” (Ivana): This piece is written by Audrey Watters who is an excellent writer on open education topics.
- Art History Teaching Resources (Sarah)
- Overview of Open Pedagogy from The Open Pedagogy Notebook (Sarah): This is written by Robin DeRosa and Rajiv Jhangiani who are educators at the forefront of Open Pedagogy.
- Art History Pedagogy and Practice (Sarah): very interesting article about power dynamics in art history classrooms which is very related to open pedagogy.

- Wrap Up Blog (Timeline Blog from each fellow)
- Optional: Post-pilot blog after you use the assignments in class
