    Reading for Second Meeting

Hello Everyone! I found this article way back after our first meeting. As a student, I am learning more about open education and what it means. I have never used hypothes.is and I am enjoying it so far. It is nice to see a platform where others are able to contribute their thoughts and include different text. Since we are sharing among each other readings, I found this one. I hope you all enjoy reading it. See you all in the next meeting!

    Belated Intro

Hi everyone! I am Laura Spinu, an assistant professor in my fourth year at KBCC. My department is Communications & Performing Arts, but my own specialization somewhat departs from either of these tracks. I am a phonetician teaching speech courses, mostly to our Speech Pathology majors. Phoneticians engage in the science of speech sounds, analyzing them from various angles: articulatory (i.e. how our bodies produce speech), auditory/perceptual (how our bodies perceive speech and how our brains decode and interpret it), and – my favorite! – acoustic (the physical properties of speech sounds as they travel through a medium, typically air). There are countless ways to be creative in the delivery…

    My goals for this semester

“What do I want to get out of the Open Pedagogy Fellowship This Semester?” I love this question – it always helps me clarify where I’m headed and whether my objectives are properly aligned with the course, seminar, fellowship, etc. In some cases, it helps me get on track from.. seemingly out of nowhere (to be read as “procrastination and lack of preparation”, haha!) I have got into the habit of asking it of my students every semester, and with a twist even – “In what ways do you expect to grow as a result of taking this course?” or “What do you expect will be difficult but most rewarding?”…

What do I want to get out of the Open Pedagogy Fellowship This Semester?

My overarching goal for this semester is the same as for the fellowship in general: to move our campus culture a little more towards open pedagogy, by having instructors who complete this fellowship be so happy about what they read about and are doing in their own classrooms that they tell all of their friends on campus.  I’m still very new to facilitating, and this program is only 1 semester old, so it’s all very new and experimental- we are very much finding our way together. I’m really hoping to improve as a facilitator, especially in learning how to listen more and talk less.  This is a major challenge for…

    Student Fellow!

Hello! My name is Emily Torres, and I am majoring in Childhood Education. I have no experience with Open Pedagogy. I am excited to learn more about it in our meetings. We are living in a pandemic and despite the situation; I think that learning and being able to give resources to professors will create a positive environment. Creating a positive environment takes effort, and it starts with allowing the student’s input on a course because we all have different learning needs. Especially because of the pandemic there are different barriers that can come into place when talking about their learning environment. As a student fellow, I am looking forward…

    Hello

I am new to Open pedagogy, I have no experience with it but I am more than excited to have this experience. I believe that this is a great opportunity for not only the teachers but also the students. Its rare that students really speak to professors outside of a classroom setting. Having the students voice their opinion is really important because a lot of these professors though they are trying, don’t know what it’s like to be a student in today’s society(especially during a pandemic) This is a great because now teachers and students are able to communicate! I can’t wait to see what this will bring. -Bianca student…

    Hello!

Colleagues, my name is Tom Rothacker. I am an Asst Professor of Theatre Arts in the Department of Communications & Performing Arts. I look forward to working with you all, especially around the idea of Assignment Design. I have used an OER for one of my Theatre courses and have adopted other texts that are available through our library for students to access. It is rare that I am making students purchases books when everything needed is at our fingertips, virtually. The idea of students having imput in assignment design intrigues me and I “may” have touched upon this is one of my classes, but need to further explore and…

    Hello from Dorina!

Hello everyone! Allow me to first introduce myself. I am a faculty at the Business Department. I teach Macroeconomics and Microeconomics. For many years, I have adopted OER materials in my courses and have been very happy with students’ feedback. I am glad to be part of this team and learn more about open pedagogy and how adopt it in my teaching. I have been fascinated by the concept of “renewable assignment.” I think that students’ performance and engagement would increase if I allow them not only to contribute to an assignment, but share it outside the classrooms’ walls (physical or digital) and even open-licensed so they allow others to…
