Reflection on Feedback
The feedback I received at the last meeting led me to explore CUNY’s Manifold Platform to publish my third open assignment: a Six-Word Memoir Project. I expanded the project and plan to continue to develop it over the summer months to incorporate texts, fictional works, and supplementary resources. A variety of creative and informational resources will be used to communicate knowledge on the subject matter. Each will provide context, content, related artifacts, and links to other materials.
The project will utilize social annotation activities and reading groups to develop critical reading skills and a sense of community. Memoir and short story genres will serve as introduction to the project. The objective will be to engage students to write for self-expression. Manifold was chosen as a forum because it empowers students as co-creators, encourages collaborative reading/writing practices, and promotes digital literacy.

I think memoirs and short stories are a great segue into self-expression. One assignment that Ive heard about regarding memoir writing is 6 word memoir. Obviously, I’m not an English professor but I do think the ability for students to be able to succinctly summarize important events is a useful skill worth developing; this type of assignment challenges them to take their 20 + years of life and summarize in 6 words.

Yes, David, that’s exactly what I’m going to develop. I had my ESL students create 6 word memoirs this semester, and their writing was inspirational.

I love this idea. Could they do this bilingually? I would love to see a 6 word memoirs in which students translanguage.

Yes! That’s a fantastic idea, and I’ll be sure to include that, Ivana. Thank you (and apologies for the delay in response… I haven’t logged on since our last meeting)!
