Initial Thoughts About Pedagogy
Throughout my career, I have welcomed the opportunity to present professional development workshops at department meetings or conferences so that I can share successful strategies, lessons, and outcomes with colleagues. If a resource I share also turns out to be successful for them and their students, I ask that they write and tell me about it. Often, educators will tweak the lesson and share a new strategy that I can implement the next time I teach the lesson. I am equally interested in knowing what did not work or if they need clarification on how to introduce an activity. Their feedback presents opportunities for me to reflect to improve subsequent practices and to approach the lesson with a new lens. In my view, sharing and producing meaningful resources for the common as a Kingsborough Open Pedagogy Fellow mimics the conference workshop or departmental professional development. Being a part of the conversation has given me an opportunity to share, learn, and collaborate with faculty from different disciplines and hear unique perspectives from our student members.
