Pedagogy..

Pedagogy, there’s so much to this specific term that has helped me understand and so much this certain group has allowed me to do. It has open up so many opportunities for me to share my thoughts and have my voice heard. I realized I really like participating in a group where we can all discuss important topics and express our own being. For example, when I entered in my Fall semester of 2019 , I did not participate in clubs at all because I am a full time student and mother. I have a 2 year old son who needs my attention. In the beginning , my own child did not see me as his mother because I was super busy with school and my mind was not 100% with him. Imagine, coming to school and then having to process the information like notes and articles. After that , coming home in the a rush , having to do dinner , clean, do homework , and then having to be with your child. I did not have much time for myself . I would always put my obligations first before myself. When the pandemic hit, I found it as a positive way for me. I spend so much time with my son and not try to balance my personal things too. And now I have this group, Open Pedagogy , a group where my voice is heard and a place where ideas are flourishing. Its a safe space too , your opinions are well structure.

Yamilla, I’m happy to read that the switch to remote learning has helped you create a little more balance in your extremely demanding schedule. I know KCC is offering time for clubs at 3pm in the Fall 2021 semester. My question to you is whether an even more flexible virtual club schedule (8pm when your son is sleeping) would encourage you to participate? Given Zoom access, virtual clubs might be convenient for many of our adult students with family obligations. I’m interested in knowing your thoughts!

Hi, Yamila. I think one of the benefits of transitioning to online meetings is that we can visualize a different kind of interaction – or at least an alternative – when being together face-to-face is not an option. I hope the colleges apply that same kind of flexibility to make it possible for more people to participate in clubs and activities.
